abstrak_tokatl: See what you get...

when your laws are based on the bible.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/meast/11/20/saudi.rape.victim/index.html

"This case is working its way through the legal process. I have no doubt that justice will prevail."

the justice spoken of is listed in the second paragraph:

"The woman was originally sentenced in October 2006 to 90 lashes. But that sentence was more than doubled to 200 lashes and six months in prison"

This law is not based on the bible. It's the Quran and it's misogynistic.

BTW, I am a religious scholar. I firmly believe it's not "God and God's laws" that are the problem, but the people who interpret them. Long story short: Religion and politics make strange bedfellows.

great, good for you. the Quran is still a bible. And if you are stuck up on what a bible is then you aren't much of a scholar. Nor have you read the rest of the discussion, nor have you read the title. You are just stuck on the question of which is still your perticular bible. and you know what, it's still just as bad to base laws on.

and btw, i've been a priest. The christian bible (as opposed to the islamic bible) is just as misogynistic.

You are right. I just commented on the fact that I had heard of this case. I did not click the link because I had read about the case on a news forum. I just read your post and the user info.

And if you are stuck up on what a bible is then you aren't much of a scholar.

However, I do disagree with this statement. Yes a law is a law, but the origin of the law or the type of law does make a difference. Well, as far as historians and lawyers are concerned.

Yes, Judo-Christian laws are misogynistic. However, they are a different kind of misogyny. Their society still favors men, but women were not completely without rights. Take this rape case for example (correct me if I am wrong): in Jewish law, the guys would have been punished not the women. It all depends on the situation. He would have been forced to do anything from pay her father a dowry to marry her.

you know what, it's still just as bad to base laws on.
In my opinion, just all laws. Take micro evolution or the mechanics of the universe. The bible does not explain these, but science and mathematics do.

So, what drive you from the "fold?" I went to Christian college chalked full of idiots and hypocrite. I am not ready to give up on the supernatural and/or paranormal, but I am done with the Church.

firstly, i wasn't driven from the fold, i never believed. i only used the comment because i just get tired of people prompting up their credentials as a a stop gap. As some way to shut someone up just because they are this or that.

I wasn't referring the the link, but the conversation i was having with someone else on this subject. That even though those laws gave rights to women, those rights where still fucked up.

one thing: "In my opinion, just all laws. Take micro evolution or the mechanics of the universe. The bible does not explain these, but science and mathematics do."

what's the point of that statement? That logic, science and mathematics should be followed and not the bible? i think that was my original point.

That was my point too. That's what I meant by Religion and politics make strange bedfellows. Look not everyone who believes in a god is a bible thumper. Some of us do agree with the points non-believers satirist are making.

Do not get mad. I actually just wanted a friendly debate with you. I am practicing for a debate match over such subjects.

abstrak_tokatl: not mad, but don't tell me what to do.

sorry, but i already had the debate with someone else. and if you are in to debates you get that sometimes they get redundant. i can only discuss things so much after feeling harassed. At least from a singular perspective.

the belief of "god" or "creator" doesn't equal a bible thumper, but a bible thumper is a bible thumper.

if you want to debate me, this is not the place. PM me if you want but i don't know if it would be of any benefit to you.
